The Mobster’s Mistress

by Morgan Jane Mitchell

I think about the phone calls and the way Enzo's expression changes whenever business interrupts our dates. The cold certainty in his voice when he says something is handled.

I used to find that confidence attractive.

Now I'm wondering exactly what he meant.

"Has he ever hurt anybody?"

Daniel watches me carefully.

"You mean personally?"

I swallow. "Has Enzo ever killed somebody?"

He doesn't answer immediately.

"I can't discuss everything investigators know or suspect about Mr. Moretti. And I'm not going to tell you something happened without evidence to support it."

That isn't the reassurance I wanted.

"He's never been anything but good to me," I whisper.

"That may be true."

"He remembers how I take my coffee. He sends me stupid pictures of desserts because he knows I love chocolate. He spent an entire evening watching terrible horror movies with me because I said I'd rather eat pizza than go to another fancy restaurant."

I stop talking when I realize how desperate I sound.

Daniel folds his hands on the table.

"I'm not telling you how he treated you, Bridget. You know that better than I do. I'm telling you there's a side of his life he hasn't shared with you, and it could put you in danger."

"Because of what he does?"

"Because of what he does, who he works for, and the people who might want to hurt him. Sometimes those people target someone close to the person they're really after."

A chill moves down my spine.

I think about Valentina standing in my apartment, knowing my name and waiting for me in the dark.

"His wife found me," I whisper. "Enzo's never even been inside my apartment, but somehow she knew where I lived."

"That's something we're looking into. We also need to determine how she got inside without forcing the door."

"She must've had somebody help her."

"Possibly. But we'll need evidence before drawing that conclusion."

I press my fingers against my forehead. Yesterday, I was thinking about telling Enzo I loved him. Now I'm sitting in a police station learning that the man who made me believe in fairy tales might be capable of things I don't even want to imagine.

"Can I give you some advice?" Daniel asks.

"At this point, I'll take anything that doesn't involve joining witness protection."

His mouth twitches. "Stay away from Lorenzo Moretti."

The words hurt more than they should.

"Even if he says he can explain everything?"
