“Have a good night, Wilda.”

Chapter sixteen

“I think she has the hots for her son’s teacher.”

Wilda sipped her coffee. Milo was gone when she woke, but he’d left a note saying he was going to the hardware store for supplies. It was the second note she’d received from him, written in crayon. He’d used a sheet from Caleb’s drawing pad and a crayon from the pack left on the table.

The man was too adorable. She pushed the note aside. “No. No, he’s not. He’s just…” She drank more coffee. If she were ever going to put herself out there again, Milo was the man she’d do it for. But of course, she wasn’t going to do that.

The back door opened, and Rachel came through it, then stopped once inside. “Oh, my goodness! You moved in this weekend.”

“Yes.”

“I guess I should stop walking right in. I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine. It sounds like you’re family, and family doesn’t knock.”

“Where’s Milo?” She sighed. “He forgot I was coming, didn’t he?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t seen him this morning.”

Rachel went to the coffeepot. “Do you mind?”

“No, go ahead.”

She poured herself a cup, then sat across the table from Wilda. “We talked about it on Friday.”

“He ran to the hardware store. I’m sure he’ll be back soon.”

Rachel read the note. “He totally forgot.” She sipped some coffee. “So, how do you like it so far?”

“The first night was great. No complaints. Milo cooked dinner last night.”

“He’s a really good cook. He’ll barely cook for himself. But if he has someone to cook for, he’s in cooking heaven. I miss that.” She smiled. “Sorry. I shouldn’t talk about that.”

“Um…what happened with you guys? Why didn’t it work out? If you don’t mind my asking.”

“We were too…we relied too much on our past history and didn’t pay enough attention to what our future might look like.” She shrugged. “Turns out we wanted different things.”

“Like what?”

“He wanted a wife and a family. I...just wanted him.”

“Oh…I’m sorry.”

“I should’ve known. He’s a kindergarten teacher after all. He loves kids. I mean…he bought this place. Seven bedrooms?”

“Did he live here when you guys were together?”

“No, he bought it afterward. During our dark time.”

“Dark time?”

“We had a rough patch after we broke up. It took a while to get back to being friends. It was weird and awkward. Even best friends have a few secrets. But after…anyway, we got through it.”

“I’m curious about one thing.”

“What’s that?”
