“By the time we got back from dropping him off in the middle of nowhere, it was almost four.”
“Still.”
“I was too jacked. I cleaned the kitchen instead.” He smelled his shirt. “I still feel like I smell like the damn bear.”
“You don’t.”
Wilda was sitting at a table with Caleb and Emma. Milo watched her for a moment. “So, Wilda saw the picture I have of you on my phone.”
“Hmm. What did she say?”
She said you have one just like it of me.”
“I do.”
“And you showed it to her?”
Rachel nudged him. “I know you like her. And she likes you. It’s like you guys are in damn high school and she’s waiting for you to ask her to prom.”
“She doesn’t want to go to prom with me. Or whatever.”
“Just hang in there.”
“She’s still in mourning.”
Rachel patted his knee again. “Give it time. I’m sure you’ll be at the top of her list once she realizes she has one.”
“I don’t need you trying to play matchmaker.”
“All I did was show her a cute picture of you and Frenchie.” She handed him a potato chip. “Keep eating.” He took the chip. “So the bear just walked right in?”
“The stupid latch on the back door.”
“You should have Mathias fix the latch.”
“I can fix it myself.”
“How long has it been broken?”
“Since I moved in.”
“Have Mathias fix it.”
“I just never thought a bear would come waltzing through it.”
“Well, now you know.”
He took a bite of the sandwich. “Mathias has bigger things to worry about.”
“Such as?”
“Nothing.”
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“Wilda’s landlord gave them a thirty-day notice.”
Rachel turned to him. “Oh my gosh. Why?”
