“Love you.”
“Unfortunately, I love you, too.” She hangs up.
I stare at James's empty profile.
Maybe Violet is right. Maybe I should block him.
My thumb hovers over the screen.
For some reason, I can’t.
Instead, a plan forms in my head. I smile.
“Let's see how curious you are, James.”
I make him work for it.
My first Story is boring. Painfully boring. It’s a picture of my computer screen with the caption: Emails. So many emails.
I post it.
Then I force myself to work for twenty minutes before checking. I grin. James saw it.
“Okay.”
Next, I post Mr. Pickles sleeping. Nothing particularly exciting about that, either. He’s lying upside down with one paw over his face. I caption that one: Monday mood.
James watches that one, too.
I sit back in my chair. “Who are you?”
Mr. Pickles opens one eye.
“Not you. Go back to sleep.”
I wait another hour, then I take a picture of the half-eaten sandwich on my desk. No cute angle. No filter. Nothing. I caption it: Lunch.
I post it.
If James watches a picture of my half-eaten turkey sandwich, he's officially invested.
I go back to work.
Twenty-seven minutes later, I check.
James saw it.
I laugh.
“Oh, James. You are either incredibly bored or weirdly interested in my life.”
Possibly both.
For some reason, my thoughts immediately drift to Roman.
My smile fades.
I look back at James's profile.
