“I usually do.”
I look at her.
The cat ears. The blonde curls. The green eyes that have been driving me fucking insane since the night I woke up in this house.
One year.
One fucking year.
A year ago, I could fit everything I owned into a bag. I never stayed anywhere longer than I had to. Never gave anyone enough information to find me. Never let anyone get close enough to matter.
Then Callie Quinn found me and decided I was hers.
She was right.
I reach into my pocket.
Her eyes drop to my hand. For once, she doesn't say anything.
I pull out the small black box.
Callie freezes.
I turn it over once in my hand.
I've killed men with steadier hands than I have right now. That's fucking irritating.
“Roman.” Her voice is barely there. Her eyes are already shining.
Fuck me.
I open the box. The ring catches the light.
Callie's hand flies to her mouth.
I lower myself onto one knee.
Alibi immediately walks over and sniffs my face.
“Not now.”
His tail wags.
Callie makes a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob.
I look up at her.
For once in her life, she has absolutely nothing to say.
I almost enjoy it.
“You spent months looking for me.”
Her hand lowers slowly.
“And you were really fucking annoying about it.”
A watery laugh escapes her.
