Every instinct I have sharpens. “What kind of confession?”
Smoke looks at me. “The flash drive.”
I go still.
Callie sits straighter.
I immediately point at her. “Stop moving.”
“Oh my God.”
Smoke's mouth twitches.
“What about the flash drive?”
He reaches inside his jacket.
My entire body tightens automatically.
His hand stops. “Jesus Christ. Relax.”
“You're reaching inside your jacket.”
“For this.” Slowly, he pulls out a small plastic case and sets it on the coffee table.
Callie and I both stare at it.
Smoke sits back. “It’s the flash drive.”
My jaw tightens.
Callie whispers, “Oh, this is going to be good.”
I lean forward. “You told me it was gone.”
“It was.”
“The fuck does that mean?”
“It wasn't in the safe.”
“Because you moved it?”
“Yeah.”
I stare at him. “You said you didn't know where it was.”
“Yeah.”
“You fucking lied.”
“Yeah.”
Something hot starts moving up my spine. “Why?”
His expression changes. “Because I didn't know you.”
I say nothing.
