Beck grows serious, pointing at Roman. “That’s what you get. I was handling another fucking job. I get back and find out Mercer took her?”

“I was busy.”

“No shit.”

“I handled it.”

Beck points at me. “She got shot at.”

“Technically. He missed.”

Everyone looks at me. “What?”

Beck moves closer, staring at the bruises, cuts, and red marks on my wrists. For the first time since he entered, his expression loses the anger. “Jesus, Callie.”

“I'm okay.”

His gaze moves to Roman. “You should've called me.”

“There wasn't time.”

“You could've⁠—”

“Beck.” Something in Roman's voice stops him.

They stare at each other.

Then Beck exhales. “Yeah.”

Roman gives him one nod.

That's it.

Apparently, they've just had an entire emotional conversation.

Beck looks at me again. “You really hit Mercer with a rock?”

“Hell yes.”

His mouth twitches. “And crashed his SUV?”

“Yes.”

“Then escaped?”

“More than once.”

He looks at Roman. “I like her.”

Roman scowls. “You already liked her.”

“I like her more now.”
