Something moves behind his eyes.
Before he can retreat into that giant emotionally constipated head of his, the door flies open.
“CALLIE!” Violet comes through it so fast she nearly takes out a nurse. Drew is right behind her.
“Oh my God.” She reaches the bed and stops. Her face crumples.
“Don't.”
Too late. She's crying.
Which means I'm crying.
“Fuck you,” I whisper.
“Fuck you.”
Then she's hugging me.
I immediately make a noise.
Violet jerks back. “Oh my God. Sorry. Sorry.”
“My ribs.”
“I’m sorry. I forgot.”
“How did you forget I have ribs?”
“You were kidnapped!”
“Technically, that doesn't remove them.”
Drew closes his eyes.
Roman makes a sound beside me.
I look at him. “Did you just laugh?”
“No.”
Violet points at him without looking away from me. “I heard it.”
“Wasn't me.”
Drew walks around her and leans over carefully. Unlike my sister, he gives me the gentlest hug in human history. “You scared the shit out of us.”
“Sorry.”
“No, you're not.”
“Not really.”
“I know.” He kisses the top of my head, then smiles.
Violet looks me over again. Her eyes stop on the bruises around my wrists. Her face changes.
“Violet.”
