“And you look like you're about to disappear again.”

I go still.

She knows me too fucking well.

Her expression softens. “No.”

One word. It’s quiet. Absolute.

“You don't get to do that.”

“I—”

“You don't have to hide from me anymore.”

Everything stops.

Callie stands in front of me, bruised and bloody and stubborn as hell. Holding my hand.

I can't speak.

Her lips tremble. “If you're planning to run because I finally saw the scary hitman part, don't.”

I stare at her. “You're fucking insane.”

A small, exhausted smile appears. It’s the most beautiful fucking thing I’ve ever seen.

“I've heard that a lot today.”

I pull her into me.

She makes a pained sound.

I immediately loosen my hold. “Sorry.”

“Still worth it.”

I bury my face against her hair.

Her arms go around my waist.

Bishop clears his throat behind us.

I lift my head. “What?”

“We should go.”

Callie peeks around me. “Is he always like this?”

“Yes.”

Bishop says, “I've known him eleven years.”

Callie's entire face brightens despite the blood and dirt.

This is going to be a fucking nightmare.

Then Bishop says, “McConnell, get her back to the road.”
