“Footprints are difficult on pavement, but it looks like someone walked that way.”

I scan the road. Trees on both sides. Nothing else.
Bishop's phone rings.
He answers. Listens. His eyes move to me.
“What?”
He holds up a finger.
I want to break it.
Finally, he hangs up.
“One of my people found blood at the edge of the woods.”
“Whose?”
“We don't know.”
“Where?”
“About a quarter mile from here.”
I'm already moving.
“Roman.”
I stop.
Bishop comes closer.
“If they're both in those woods, Mercer is injured too.”
“Good.”
“He may be armed.”
“I know. So am I.”
“He knows we're looking for him.”
“I know.”
“And if Callie's moving—”
“She is.”
Bishop looks at me.
