“Stop.”
“I can't.”
“Bullshit.”
I turn my head. “I'm dizzy.”
He studies me.
I let my eyes unfocus.
The woods are already moving a little.
“I think I'm going to throw up.”
“Then throw up.”
“On you?”
He immediately loosens his grip.
I bend forward.
One.
Two.
Mercer shifts behind me.
Three.
I gag.
Also not completely fake. My stomach really does hate me.
He steps to the side.
Perfect.
I straighten fast and slam the back of my head toward his face.
He jerks away.
I miss.
I spin and shove his injured arm with both hands.
Mercer screams, and the gun dips.
I run.
“CALLIE!”
I don't look back.
I hear him crashing through the brush behind me. But not as fast now.
I run downhill. Bad choice. But I can't stop now.
