Drew's head turns toward Violet. “She what?”

“Different story,” Callie says quickly.

“She also broke into my house.”

Callie whips around. “Whose side are you on?”

“Mine.”

Drew closes his eyes for a second. “I should've gone straight home.”

Violet takes the bag from him. “Probably.”

“Can I still?”

“No,” Violet says.

“Well, I need to go pack.”

Drew looks at Callie. “Are you going on vacation?”

“No.” She points at me. “Witness protection. With the hitman.”

Drew chokes.

“Jesus Christ, Chaos.”

She’s already heading toward the stairs.

I step back and let Drew enter. Then I close the door behind him.

The three of us stand there awkwardly.

Alibi trots over and sits beside me. He sighs.

Violet looks amused. “I’ll go help Callie pack.”

Drew’s eyes fly wide. He looks panicked. “Wait⁠—”

She’s already going up the stairs.

He holds the bag against his chest and gives me a nervous smile. Then he looks at Alibi leaning against my leg. “So.”

I wait.

“Does yours listen?”

I stare at him. “No.”

He clears his throat. “I wasn’t talking about the dog.”

“Neither was I.”

He nods. “Yeah. Neither does mine. Must be a Quinn trait.”

I don’t say anything.

“Telling them what to do doesn't work.”
