“Pack your bag.”
Her eyes narrow again.
I hold up a hand before she can start. “And when you're done, I'll tell you what I know.”
She studies me. “You promise?”
I don't make promises. Promises give people something to hold against you. Something they expect you to keep. Something that matters if you fail.
“Yeah. I promise.”
Her expression softens. “Okay.”
She turns toward the door. I catch her wrist before she gets past me.
Callie looks down at my hand, then up at me.
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“No more stalking me until this is over.”
She stares at me. “Define stalking.”
I close my eyes.
Behind us, Violet laughs.
The doorbell rings.
My eyes fly open. Every muscle in my body tightens.
“It's probably Drew,” Callie says.
“Probably?”
“Well, I wasn't expecting you either, and look how that turned out.”
I release her wrist. “Stay here.”
Her eyebrows shoot up. “What? No.”
I walk toward the front of the house.
“Roman.”
I keep going.
“It's my house.”
“And?”
“You can't answer my door.”
I glance back at her. “Watch me.”
“Oh my God.”
