Chaos: Back at the office. Alibi too. Doors locked because apparently I take orders now. Don't get used to it.

My chest loosens slightly.

Chaos: Also you owe me a coffee. I left Alibi’s iPad at Bramble and he’s pouting.

Despite everything, the corner of my mouth twitches.

Then it disappears when I see Mercer still standing at the corner, looking down the street where she vanished.

Yesterday, Callie was outside this. Now Gavin Mercer knows her face. And maybe he knows she’s connected to me.

My gaze follows him as he finally starts walking.

I make a call.

Bishop answers on the second ring. “What?”

“We have a problem. Mercer was at the coffee shop.”

There’s a pause.

“And?”

“He noticed someone.”

“Who?”

My jaw tightens. “Callie.”

Silence.

Bishop knows exactly who I mean.

“You said she wasn't involved.”

“She isn't.”

“Apparently Mercer didn't get the memo.”

My fingers curl around the phone. “She walked into the coffee shop. He was there. That's it.”

“Did she interact with him?”

“No.”

“Did he see you?”

“Maybe.”

“That's not like you.”

My jaw clenches harder. “I wasn't standing in the fucking window waving at him.”

“I didn't say you were.”

“You were thinking it.”

“I was thinking you sound defensive.”
