She nods. “Yes.”
“Next time you break into my house, bring the dog with you.”
She beams at me as I look over my shoulder and back out of the garage. My eyes meet hers a second before I put the truck in drive.
Goddamn. She does something to me.
Something she shouldn’t.
This is fucking ridiculous.
I've done a lot of questionable shit in the middle of the night. Driving down a residential street wearing nothing but a towel with a woman handcuffed in my passenger seat while we retrieve her dog is somehow near the top of the list.
Callie points through the windshield. “There.”
I slow.
“The gray Toyota.”
“I know what your car looks like.”
She turns her head. “It’s a rental?”
I pull up behind it. “I figured.”
Callie smiles.
“Don't.”
“You know what my car looks like.”
“You've followed me in it.”
“Still counts.”
“Get the dog, Chaos.”
She reaches for the door. The handcuff around her wrist rattles.
“Give me your wrist.”
She looks at the key in my hand. “You say the sweetest things.”
I unlock the cuff.
She rubs her wrist, grinning. “I'm keeping those.”
“No, you're fucking not.”
“Christmas is coming.”
“Get. The. Dog.”
Laughing, she climbs out.
I watch her run over to the passenger side. She opens the door. The dog goes nuts, practically falling out of the car seat, licking her face.
Fuck it.
