Me: Thought you were showering.
Three dots appear. Disappear. Appear again.
Roman: I did.
Me: For forty minutes?
Roman: I’m thorough.
I snort.
Me: Your truck is still here.
Nothing.
I wait.
And wait.
Finally, he responds.
Roman: Observant.
I narrow my eyes.
Me: Who picked you up?
No response.
Me: Beck?
Nothing.
Oh my God. It was Beck. I just know it.
I shove my phone into my pocket and march toward the side exit. The door opens into a smaller parking area behind the building.
I step outside and look around.
Empty.
Completely fucking empty.
I put my hands on my hips.
He left his truck here because he knew I'd watch for it.
I should be annoyed. And I am.
But mostly, I'm impressed.
Roman didn't speed away. Didn't lose me in traffic. Didn't even give me the chance to follow him.
Smart. Very smart.
My phone buzzes.
Roman: Don't follow me.
