I nod. “We need to get out of here before her backup arrives.”
But as if my words have summoned them, three black SUVs come to a screeching halt out the front.
Enzo bursts through the doors and shoves us toward the back. “Time to go!”
CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN
CHLOE
NOW
By some miracle, there’s no one waiting for us in the back alley, and Enzo shoves me in the opposite direction to the car.
“You okay to run, darlin’?”
“I don’t think I have much choice right now.” I half laugh, but the panic raging through my chest overshadows any humor.
Corbin takes my hand, and we sprint toward the mouth of the alley, our heavy footsteps and panting breaths fill my ears alongside my racing heartbeat.
Maybe Damon and Ryker were right.
Maybe I shouldn’t have come here on my own.
I trust Corbin and Enzo to keep me safe, but it’s different than having one of my guys here.
Enzo throws an arm out as we reach the end, and I grind to a halt while he checks the street before ushering us to run in front of him.
I used to keep myself in really good shape, but the last month has been…taxing to say the least, and I haven’t been on the treadmill since I left the De Marco estate.
If I make it out of this alive, I’m reinstating daily training if for no other reason than to never feel like my chest is going to cave in from panting so hard.
“We have company,” Enzo shouts, making Corbin curse as he drags me further up the street.
Suddenly the Florida sun is a problem I’d rather not be dealing with.
“What do we do?” I pant, trying not to let the fear seep into my voice but it’s pointless.
I’m fucking terrified, and pretending I’m not isn’t going to help matters.
“We just need to break off from them long enough to get in a taxi. There’s so many in the city that it will be easy to lose them, but we need a minute or two head start so we don’t lead them straight to the airfield.”
“Something tells me that’s going to be easier said than done.”
“Turn left up here,” Enzo calls out, and we don’t hesitate to do as he says.
This alley is tighter than the first one, and there’s a car already parked halfway down. With any hope we’ll lose the cars that are tailing us, leaving us with whoever is on foot.
We barely make it past the car before Corbin tugs me behind a dumpster so hard my shoulder screams in protest, but the sound of gunshots eats up my complaints immediately.
Corbin peeks around the edge, his own gun produced from God knows where as he pops off a couple of shots before ducking back around.
“You okay?”
I nod, my breaths sawing in and out of my chest.
“Once Enzo gives us the all-clear, we’re going to make a run for the end of the alley. You and me are going to jump into a taxi while he holds them off, and then he’ll meet us.”
“We can’t leave him!”
