Stay Little Fighter

“Good girl,” he murmurs. “Now when we reach the edge of the van, I want you to drop it there. Can you do that for me?”

I frown, eyes darting over his features as if they alone can give me the answers I’m looking for. But when he doesn’t elaborate, I nod.

It goes against my instincts to blindly trust Damon. After years of cruelty. Years of lies and betrayal, the only thing that comes naturally when it comes to him is a healthy dose of suspicion. But right now he is my best chance of survival.

It’s either rely on him to save us or die, because there’s no way I’m escaping alone with a gunshot wound.

We reach the edge of the van, and I keep my eyes locked on the men as I drop the cool metal onto the edge of the road, hoping like hell that Damon knows what he’s doing, because right now, it could be the only thing that gets us out of this alive.

CHAPTER TWO

KINGSTON

NOW

Glancing at the bag of weapons we packed before we left the cabin, my stomach sinks. We’re almost out of ammo.

Guilt slams into my chest as I unload my clip through the shattered window of the room Chloe and I were sleeping peacefully in twenty minutes ago, but I force my mind to remain on task.

Backup will be here shortly.

We just have to hold them off until the guys get here.

I’ll admit, when Ryker told me Corbin had gone over my head and ordered backup for us, I was pissed. It’s not his job to make that kind of call. But then he helpfully pointed out that our only chance of getting out of here alive is because they took it upon themselves to make sure we were covered if we needed it.

So maybe it’s me I’m annoyed with.

For not thinking through all the possibilities.

For underestimating our opponent.

For letting my ego get in the way of protecting Chloe.

“How far out are your guys?” Ronan shouts from the other room.

Ryker disappeared out the bathroom window not long after Damon and Chloe. I made him promise he wasn’t going after them, but it’s been at least five minutes, and he hasn’t surfaced around the front, making me think he’s done exactly that.

He doesn’t trust Damon with her safety, and if I’m honest, I don’t either.

We should have sent her with Ronan, but his brother was the only one that had shoes on and could get her out the quickest, which was ultimately the most important thing.

I duck below the window and check my phone for updates. Thankfully Ryker had the forethought to hand it off before he took off to do whatever it is he’s doing.

Bringing up the app I use to track all my guys, I’m relieved to find Rocco’s tracker just a few miles away, and with the way Remy drives, they’ll be here any minute now.

“They’re close!” I call out.

“Thank fuck.”

He can say that again.

The sooner we take out these assholes, the sooner I can get eyes back on my girl and make sure she’s not hurt.

Even the thought makes my stomach bottom out as a fresh spray of bullets unleashes through the window.

While I have the app open, I check on Ryker, comforted when I find the tracker still active, meaning he hasn’t gone and got himself killed. I’m also relieved when I find him still within the vicinity of the motel.

Shoving my phone back in my pocket, I check how much ammunition I have left and let out a rough curse.
