Kane’s jaw ticks like he wants to argue, but knows better than to do so in front of an audience. His Alpha made his decision, and he can probably tell—just as I can—that there will be no dissuading him.

A knock at the door makes me frown. Whoever the hell is interrupting better be sure what they’re doing. Then again, I don’t know if I can handle another emergency tonight, so hopefully it’s just an overeager Beta with drinks.

Sighing, Gav crosses the room and cracks open the door. I strain to hear, but all I can make out from the brief exchange is a hissed, “You’re fucking kidding me,” then louder, “Now?”

“I mean, I can’t exactly tell him she’s busy washing her hair,” who I recognize now as Silas, mumbles in reply. Gav turns, sweeping his gaze around the room with a calculated look.

“What’s going on?” Vae asks.

“We need to go,” Gav replies. “There was an abandoned warehouse located by two Bastards an hour ago.”

“So? It’s like… eleven o’clock at night. Why can’t they take care of it?”

“Well, first of all, because they reported picking up the faint scent of magic. The same as when—”

“I’m out,” Vae announces before he can finish. “I can’t be around that scent again.”

“What scent?” Soren asks.

“None of your business, mutt.” Vae turns a glare on Soren, but Gav holds up a hand, cutting him off with a shake of his head.

“It’s fine if he knows. He’s coming with us.”

My mouth drops open. “Why?”

“Because they found an Omega,” Gav answers, closing the door and crossing the room, not stopping until he’s standing in front of the Omega. The vacant look in her eyes hasn’t left since I last checked, and she doesn’t notice his presence. Not even when he crouches down so that he’s closer to eye level with her.

“Idril.” His voice is a gentle rumble, but she doesn’t respond

It’s not until he places a large hand on her knee that she finally moves. Her head whips up with a jerk, and she flinches back, like she’s just been yanked from a dream.

She blinks. “Y-yes?”

“Do you know an Omega named Branwen?”

She frowns, shaking her head. “No, the only Omega I’ve ever known was my mother.”

“My men found an Omega tonight. We believe she was kidnapped by your father.”

Her eyes widen.

“They said she’s refusing to leave. Not until she speaks to you.”

Chapter 4

Idril

Ihaven’t been outside in over a week, and now that I am, I can’t even enjoy it.

Scrunched in the backseat of a huge SUV next to Soren, I’ve spent the whole ride staring out the window, watching the world blur as we race past it.

The stars seem a thousand times brighter than normal; the moonlight bathes everything in a beautiful silver hue. It must be the middle of the night by now.

Will this day never end?

I’ve lost count of how many times my eyes have fallen—as they do now—to marvel at the brand new shoes on my feet. When Vae raced out of the room, ignoring Daxen’s demand to tell him what was so important that it couldn’t wait until they got back, I wasn’t expecting him to come back with… these.

White Converse low tops. Brand new, and somehow… a perfect fit.
