I squeeze her hand and swallow around the lump in my throat. “Thank you. I hope wherever you go, you find peace and happiness.”
Powers leans down and kisses my head, offering me his calm in the middle of this storm, reminding me that no matter what we face, we’ll do it side by side.
Together, we can make it through anything.

LUCY
I blink, my brain trying to figure out why all I can see is white. “What the heck?”
I scramble to my feet and look around, but it’s as if I’ve stepped into a wall of fog.
“Hello?” I call out before my gaze falls on what I’m wearing. Gone is my diner uniform, and in its place is the red dress I bought to wear for my date with Capone. The one I wore to his funeral instead. “But I burned this,” I mutter, confused.
Light breaks through the fog, getting brighter and brighter the closer it gets. Thunder rumbles closer, and I try to remember if a storm was forecast earlier, but everything in my head is hazy.
“Did I get drunk?” I mumble as the light begins to take shape. By the time I realize it’s a headlight, it’s too close for me to move out of the way. I brace myself for impact. When nothing happens, I open my eyes and see the most beautiful eyes staring back at me. A gasp slips out before I can stop it.
“Hey, Lucy, you ready for that date?”
I stare at the man at ease on his bike and swallow as he holds his hand out to me.
“Capone?”
He grins. “It’s about time you got here.”
I swallow again, my mouth suddenly dry as the puzzle pieces start to slot together. “You died.”
“I know. I’m sorry. God knows the only thing that could have kept me from you was death.”
“I’m dead too, aren’t I?” I whisper.
His expression is sad as he nods. “Yeah, sweetheart, you are. But Greer is alive because of you, and so are all the future children she’s destined to help.”
I nod. It feels right. Weird, but right. “So what now?”
“Now you take my hand, climb on the back of my bike, and I’ll take you on that date I promised.”
I bite my lip before I reach out a shaky hand and slip it into his. He helps me on, and I don’t hesitate to wrap my arms tightly around him, just like all those months I dreamed of doing.
“And after our date?” I ask, excited but afraid of what comes next.
“We have an eternity to figure it out, baby.”
“You and me?”
He nods, looking over his shoulder, throwing me one of those sexy grins of his. “Just like it was always supposed to be.”
