“I’ll be back in a second. I’m just going to put my to-go order in,” Greer says to me before dipping out and heading to the counter.

“Okay, I’m going. Later, guys,” Delphi calls out before she hurries over to the kids.

“Congrats, Kruger. Greer’s right, Rebecca and Theo are lucky to have parents like you. Take it from someone who knows.”

He reaches over and hugs me, making Powers growl. “You have your own damn woman. Go hug her.”

Kruger just laughs before he gets to his feet. “I’m taking the kids to the movies. You want to come?”

“I’m due back at the track in less than an hour,” Powers answers.

I shake my head. “I’m meeting Circus over at the shelter. He wants to talk about the renovations.”

Both go quiet at the mention of the Circus. I think everyone hoped that when he offered to work at the women’s shelter, it would keep him busy and help him channel some of his anger into something useful, but the man is becoming increasingly withdrawn.

“I’ll invite him over for pizza later. I can be persuasive when I need to be.”

“She’s not lying,” Powers winks.

Kruger laughs again and starts to walk away. “Catch you both later.”

Powers leans on the table, his eyes on my lips. “I need to fuck my wife before I head back to work.”

“I never get tired of hearing you call me that,” I admit, leaning closer.

He slips his finger underneath the chain hanging around my neck and tugs me closer, his dog tags now closed in his fist as he takes my lips in a scorching kiss.

I’d kiss him forever if it weren’t for the fact that my cell phone rings. I sigh and pull back. Checking the screen, I frown at who it is.

“It’s Lane.”

“Why’s your lawyer calling?”

I shrug before taking the call. “Hey, Lane. What’s up?”

After everything went down with James, the MC moved quickly to protect me. They pulled Lane in from the get-go, and the man stood between me and the Feds like a fucking gladiator ready to cleave their heads from their shoulders. Thankfully, when the contents of the security deposit box were revealed, law enforcement backed off. I don’t know how Lauren got her hands on what she did, but if he’d been alive, it would have been enough to ensure James never saw the light of day again.

Thanks to an innocuous-looking hard drive, G was able to find no end of nefarious shit—from what James did to his sister, to what he did to me. There were also detailed accounts of what he did to the missing girls and where their remains would be found. It read almost like a diary, and I couldn’t help but wonder if it was a trophy that a serial killer kept. Make no mistake, that’s what he was. He abused and killed many people over the years and didn’t show a single ounce of remorse. I was sorry the people left behind never got justice for their daughters, sisters, or wives, but I hoped they could find peace now that he was dead.

I couldn’t let him live. He had too much money and too many connections. It was only a matter of time before he’d find some loophole and walk free, plunging my life into chaos again.

Lane’s words snap me out of my thoughts. “Wait, what? I don’t understand. I wasn’t really his wife.”

“Doesn’t matter. He named you, Lilith Taylor, his beneficiary. Regardless of the reasons why, all his money and assets are yours.”

“But I don’t want it.”

“You might not want it,” he starts, his voice softening as he talks. “But think of all the good you could do with it. It’s the ultimate fuck you to use all his money to help women, don’t you think?”

“I guess. But what about Rebecca? Didn’t he leave anything to her?”

“You’re working on the assumption he cared. He didn’t. Not in the way regular folks do. Rebecca was nothing more than a pawn. Just because he treated her well doesn’t mean he loved her.”

I sigh. He’s right, but it’s still a bitter pill to swallow.

“Of course, nothing is stopping you from setting up a trust for her. It’s entirely up to you, Lil. I’ve gotta go. I’m due in court in an hour, but I’ll email over everything you need to sign, and then I’ll get the money transferred into your account. If you want me to arrange the sale of the properties and vehicles, I can do that, too. Everything else will be liquidated.”

When I don’t answer, he says my name softly. “Lil?”
