Picking up my phone, I glanced at the dark screen. No messages. I put it facedown. Yoli stared at me, a smile playing around her lips.

“What?” I asked.

She shook her head, then exchanged a look with Reign. Reign suddenly became deeply interested in her tablet.

I narrowed my eyes. “Nah. What’s up?”

“I'm working,” Reign said quickly.

“I'm observing,” Yoli answered.

“Observe your damn spreadsheet.”

“I was. Then I ‘observed’ you checking your phone for the fourth time in approximately ten seconds. Whew, these powers of observation strong over here.”

“That bullshit even stronger. Anyway, it’s a phone. That’s what people do with them,” I defended myself.

Yoli snorted. “Not you.”

I sat back in my chair. “Please tell me what I do then, Yolanda Nichols?”

My former best friend laughed outright. “Aww, not the government! Yo’ big ass salty, huh? Anyway, you usually leave that bitch somewhere and make Topaz find it.”

Reign laughed before catching herself. My eyes moved to her.

“My apologies,” she said, trying to hide her smile.

“See?” Yoli pointed toward her. “You got Reign laughing at you now. Man, the whole damn company losing respect for leadership.”

“Don’t include me in this,” Reign protested.

“Too late.”

I looked between them. “Are we done working?”

“No,” Reign answered immediately, eyes on me.

“Yes,” Yoli said at the same time, eyes on Reign.

I ignored Yoli. “Inspection report looks good overall,” I summarized. “Run the revised numbers, get the last insurance quote, and have legal review the HOA restrictions again. I don’t want Boykins finding out after closing that somebody on this island suddenly got shit to say about his rentals.”

Reign nodded. “I’ll have everything together this afternoon.”

“Good.”

She gathered her tablet and a couple of folders. Yoli didn’t move. I looked at her.

“What?”

“Where you taking Thickness tonight?”

I sighed. “First, you gotta stop calling her that. Like, immediately, Yolanda. Second, why yo’ nosy ass care?”

She grabbed her chest and sighed dramatically. “I’ve invested six and a half years watching y’all get on everybody’s fucking nerves. The people deserve closure.”

Reign stopped gathering her things. I pointed toward the door.

“You can go.”
