I felt tears welling in my eyes. He’d scored a touchdown in his last game. He’d remember this moment forever. We all would.
“Miller!” Scarlett yelled.
I laughed and kept clapping. My voice was already hoarse from cheering.
Jacob and Liam both jumped in the air, knocking their shoulders into each other. And then RJ leapt onto Jacob’s back.
Axel ran onto the field and the stadium grew even louder.
He was a trooper for coming out to make that play happen. I didn’t know many starters that were willing to do that.
It took the refs forever to get the right players on the field so we could kick the extra point.
“Go, Leo!” I yelled as the kick sailed perfectly through the center of the uprights.
Scarlett did not cheer for the kick.
I gave her a look. “He tied it.”
“He’s an ass.”
I laughed. “Who you thought you might be in love with.”
“I never loved Leo. He lied to me.”
I shook my head and kept cheering. Yes, Leo had pretended to be her kiss thief for a bit. I don’t really think he’d meant any harm though. It was just a big misunderstanding. And it had all worked out.
The stadium didn’t quiet down until the guys ran off the field toward the locker rooms.
“They’re going to win,” I said. “I can feel it.”
“Jinx!” Scarlett said.
I shook my head. “They’ve got this.” My eyes landed back on Mr. Halifax. Tonight was supposed to be the night. God, it would have been so fun to celebrate this win with him. I knew as soon as we kissed it would feel as electric as this stadium.
“So...” Scarlett said. “Any word from your mystery man?”
“I thought we agreed to drop that?”
“I’m not asking from a hooking up perspective. The guys really think he’s gonna do something terrible.”
“He’s not,” I said.
“How can you be sure?”
I’d had a couple days to calm down about this. “Having a crush on my teacher isn’t a crime. We haven’t done anything.”
“But you’re planning to.”
“Not in public,” I said. Going to that club to try to dance with Mr. Halifax had been a mistake. If we were going to do this, we had to be careful. At least until I graduated.
“What if your mystery man finds out if you act on your crush though?”
I shrugged. “Your mom and dad dated in secret.”
“My mom was in college though,” Scarlett said. “High school and college are a big difference. And she had to move. Change schools. I don’t think it was easy.”
“But they’re happy.”
