“Sophie.”

I looked up at him. “Jacob.”

“Did that guy do something?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. Help me measure that corner over there.” I started walking, but Jacob caught my wrist.

“He did do something. Didn’t he?”

I sighed.

“Tell me.”

I opened my mouth and closed it again. “He didn’t do anything. I did.”

“What do you mean?”

“I may have let it slip that I had a thing for Mr. Halifax.”

“Soph.”

“It was a mistake. He was being all annoying and I was tipsy and...” I bit the inside of my lip.

“Did he say he was going to tell someone?”

I shook my head. “No. He said my secret was safe with him. But I don’t know if I can trust him. I figured I’d check the app every now and then to make sure he doesn’t bring it up.” I was kind of trying my best to pretend the whole thing hadn’t happened. But I couldn’t get it out of the back of my head. And it was nice to finally come clean to someone.

“Give me your phone.”

Okay, maybe coming clean to Jacob wasn’t the best idea. He always just wanted to fix everything and this couldn’t exactly be fixed. “I told you I left it in my bag.”

“I can see the outline of it in your back pocket, Soph.”

I smiled. “Are you checking out my butt, Jacob?”

Jacob didn’t respond. He just put his hand out.

I sighed. “What are you going to do?” I dropped my phone into his hand.

“I’m going to let him know who he’s messing with.”

This seemed like a bad idea. But the whole thing was already a mess. Maybe Jacob could somehow actually fix this.

I stared at my phone as he typed. My mystery man had only left me one message since Saturday night. He’d asked me if I’d gotten home safe.

Jacob hit send on his message: “Look, if you mess with my friend you mess with all of us. Forget everything she said the other night. Forget you ever met her. She’s deleting this app.”

Jacob’s message in response to what the mystery man had most recently messaged seemed a bit extreme. My mystery man was concerned about my safety. So why would he blackmail me?

My phone buzzed. “The protective friend. Jacob Miller, right?”

“I really hate this guy,” Jacob said.

Yeah, I got that.

My phone buzzed again. “Trust me, if I could forget about her, I would. You think I’m used to being ignored like this? It sucks. Tell Aphrodite I say hey, baby.”

I laughed.
