Adonis slowly nodded. “It’s one of the only things I remember about her. That and the fact the she was beautiful.”

My heart felt funny in my chest.

He cleared his throat again. “Sorry, if you think the necklace is weird I can get you a different one. There are a lot of symbols for Aphrodite. Like seashells. I’ll get you a seashell necklace...”

“Don’t you dare. I love this one.”

“You do?”

I nodded and took a deep breath. I loved this necklace and I loved the boy that had given it to me. “And about what you said earlier about loving me?”

Adonis ran his fingers through his sweaty hair. “I know that was probably too soon, but I’m not going to stand here and pretend I didn’t mean it when I’ve been wanting to tell you for a while now...”

“I love you too.”

I swear his green eyes looked a shade brighter. “Yeah?”

I smiled. “So freaking much.”

He grabbed my waist, pulling me closer. “Say it again.”

And I realized that maybe Adonis was starved for love. I was glad he’d given me the time to heal. Because I had a whole bunch of love to give now and I was giving it all to him. “I love you, Adonis Ariti.”

He sighed and dropped his forehead to mine, like those were the most amazing words he’d ever heard in his life.

And I knew he didn’t hear them very much. So I said it again and again.

He laughed and silenced me with a kiss. “I’m never letting you go,” he whispered.

I believed him. I felt the same. When I was in his arms I felt invincible. I felt like nothing could possibly tear us apart. Because I was his and he was mine.

But Aphrodite was littered in the pages of Greek tragedies. And Atropos wasn’t done with me yet. She loved cutting threads, especially when you least expected it.

Chapter 39 – Just Like We Always Wanted

Tuesday – 3 Weeks Later

I wasn’t exactly sure what I was looking at. Scar and Axel were usually making out at her locker. But today her arms were thrown around his neck one second and then she was staring at her phone and squealing the next.

And then they started making out.

“That was weird,” RJ said.

I laughed. “Yeah.” Something weird was definitely afoot. I would have guessed they’d just gotten engaged if they weren’t already.

“What’s up, guys?” RJ asked as we both stopped to see what was going on.

Scarlett pulled back from the kiss, but Axel still held her close. “Tell me you got it,” she said. She’d been ecstatic a moment ago and now she looked terrified.

“Seriously...what is going on, baby doll? You’re freaking me out.”

Scarlett ignored him. She was just staring at me. And now she just looked worried.

“I don’t understand what’s happening,” I said.

“Check your email,” Axel said.

“Okay?” I pulled out my phone and clicked into my email. There was an unopened email from the University of New Castle at the top of my inbox. My heart started pounding.
