“Yes,” I quickly said. I was not about to murder Adonis with pudding at my house.
The waitress handed me a dessert menu. “I’ll give you several minutes with that.”
“Not necessary,” Adonis said and grabbed it.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“Saving you. Ordering seems painful for you. I’ve got this. Do you like chocolate?”
I nodded.
He turned to the waitress. “We’ll split the chocolate cake.”
I laughed and shook my head. I’d seen the menu and there was no way...
“But can we have the caramel sauce on the side?” he asked. “And the icing. And we don’t want the strawberries to touch the cake and make it soggy. So can you put them in a little bowl? Oh, and a little bowl of whipped cream too.”
The waitress raised her eyebrow at him. She was probably wondering if picky ordering was contagious. “Is that all?”
Adonis turned to me. “Sound good, Aphrodite?”
I smiled. It actually sounded perfect. I nodded.
“Great.” He handed the menu back to her.
RJ and my dad ordered something. But I was too busy smiling at Adonis. No one had ever ordered for me before and gotten it right.
“And now I have four of them,” my dad sighed. “I can never go anywhere.” He actually looked very pleased by this.
I laughed.
Adonis lightly tugged on the ends of my hair.
I turned to look up at him.
“Why do you dye your hair?” he whispered.
I lifted my hand to my roots that I knew were showing. It was an understatement to say I’d kind of let myself go over the past several weeks. I needed to make an appointment to fix that. “I just always have.”
“You’d look good with dark hair.”
I smiled. “Thank you, but I prefer being blonde.”
“Hm.” He nuzzled his nose in the side of my neck. “Okay. I just wanted you to know that you’d look beautiful either way.”
That was sweet. But I’d been dying it for so long that being blonde felt more like me. And that’s all I wanted. To get back to being me. Adonis was making it easier every day.
A few minutes later our desserts came out.
“Wait,” Adonis said but the waitress was already walking off. He shook his head. “They put the caramel on the cake like monsters,” he said. “I’ll fix it.”
“You don’t...”
But he was already getting up. He grabbed the plate, but instead of going up to the waitress, he pushed through the doors into the kitchen.
RJ laughed. “Did he just go into the kitchen?”
I shook my head. So apparently Adonis acted familiar with everyone.
