I would have asked him how he knew, but he’d probably seen my profile disappear. “Maybe I just blocked you on it.”
“I don’t think so.” His eyes dropped to my lips.
I cleared my throat and looked out the windshield that was starting to fog. We’d been in here talking for a while. And I was vaguely aware that he’d already wasted enough time on me. I didn’t want to lead him on. “You can do better than the Triple Gs,” I said.
“I know. I can do you.”
I laughed and shook my head. “I’m serious. They’re terrible. Some of the other cheerleaders are okay. Just...not them.”
“Aphrodite, look at me.”
I really didn’t want to. Because then I’d get lost in his green eyes. And probably say something I regretted.
He reached out and lightly put his fingers on the bottom of my chin, turning my face to look at him. His fingers were cold. And I realized he’d turned all the vents on me.
“I’m not interested in the Triple Js.”
“Gs.”
“Whatever. But it is fun seeing you jealous. I think seeing you furious makes me play even better. You’re hot when you’re mad.”
I swatted his hand off my chin. “I’m not jealous.”
“If you say so.”
“I do.” I exhaled slowly. I was relieved to hear he didn’t like the Triple Gs. But I was annoyed that he’d wound me up on purpose. There was a part of me that wanted to climb over the center console and straddle his lap. But there was a much bigger part of me that was warning me to stay still. To not let anyone else try to break me. I cleared my throat. “I really need to get home.”
“Okay. Are you going to let me up?”
“No, you have a party to get to.”
“I’d rather come up. RJ said he was going over to Liam’s to pregame. And he mentioned that your parents are at some fancy gala.”
I swallowed hard. He knew I was going to be home alone. I quickly shook my head.
“We could watch a movie or something,” he said.
I raised my eyebrow. “That’s what you want to do? Watch a movie?” Because I could maybe be okay with that. Like really okay with that.
“No, not really.” Adonis smiled. “I’d rather make you forget all about Hephaestus.”
I didn’t laugh. Because that was the whole problem. No matter how badly it hurt, I didn’t want to forget. Scarlett had let Jacob heal her heart. I didn’t want Adonis to heal mine. Because then Mr. Halifax would just be...gone. Forever.
Adonis handed me the dirty paper towel again. “But I guess I could get down with a movie.”
I shook my head. “I really just want to be alone tonight.”
“No one wants to be alone, Aphrodite.”
I did. “You should go to that party. You’ll have fun.”
Adonis sighed and put his car into reverse. “No. I won’t.”
I stared at his profile as he drove. His strong jaw and his sweaty hair that somehow looked good matted down. But I was more focused on the subtle frown he was making.
When we first met, he’d known I was wishing it was someone else’s hands on my hips. I’d been completely honest about that. Like he’d been completely honest with me. He’d only come over because I reminded him of someone he knew. Someone who didn’t like him back.
I wondered if he said he wouldn’t have fun at the party because I wasn’t there. Or because his unrequited crush wouldn’t be. I was too scared to ask him. Because I liked his attention. I was starting to love it, actually.
