“And I’m stuck here dreaming of feathers and crying into stale coffee for the rest of my life. Alone. Because I’m so bad at sex.”

Jacob cleared his throat and sat down next to me instead of his usual seat behind me. “Soph?”

“Don’t worry, I don’t need a second opinion.”

“That’s not...”

“Wait, why are you sitting there?”

He exhaled slowly. “Scarlett is trying to tell you something important. I think.”

“I know. She sees dead people now.”

“Sophie Roberta Hunter!” Scarlett yelled.

I turned toward her. Why was she yelling at me? Didn’t she know I was in a fragile state? My bottom lip started to tremble.

She was about to open her mean mouth again, but the bell rang.

Uncle James gave Scarlett a weird look. Yeah, I didn’t know why she was screaming at me either. She probably needed to be grounded again.

Uncle James turned his attention to me. “Are you okay, Sophie? Do you need to go to the nurse again?” I’d gone to the nurse yesterday because I couldn’t even. But staring at the ceiling for the rest of the day had ended up being worse than this class. Hearing about syntax and algorithms was at least a little distracting.

“I’m fine,” I lied.

“Okay,” he said. “Well, before we begin today, we have a new student joining us.” Uncle James grabbed a clipboard off his desk. “Let’s all welcome Adonis Ariti.”

It was the kind of name a parent named their kid when they were trying too hard for their kid to be cool. I rolled my eyes. Those kids never turned out cool.

Scarlett reached her leg across the aisle and kicked me.

Ow!

She pointed behind me.

I started to turn my head, but froze when I felt someone’s hot breath behind my ear.

“Sounds like you made that mistake, Aphrodite.”

Oh fuck.

Chapter 25 – Cruel Twist of Fate

Thursday

My eyes grew round. Seriously...fuck me. Not that anyone should want to do that. Ugh. I closed my eyes tight. What had I just done? I wanted to scream. Instead I took a deep breath and opened my eyes. Screw me.

Adonis Ariti was my mystery man. Because of course he was. And of course his name was freaking Adonis! Because Adonis was a mere mortal that Aphrodite had an affair with. Gah!

“I was trying to warn you,” Scarlett whispered.

I stayed completely frozen. My mystery man was behind me. And he’d heard everything I’d just said. God, why had I talked about being a bad lay so loudly?! I cringed.

“For the record, I tried to warn you too,” my mystery man whispered. “Not about me. But about that mistake.”

Oh, screw him. I turned around to tell him off. But I was met with the most gorgeous pair of green eyes staring back at me.

And they were way too close.
