“You lived in a van.” He blinked. “The whole time?"

She nodded. “Pretty much. Bought it in Montana. Sold the Bronco.”

“Where’d you go?”

“Everywhere.”

He waited.

Eventually, she sighed. “The Pacific Coast. Arizona. New Mexico. The Gulf Coast. Florida. Up the East Coast.” She shrugged, climbed into the driver’s seat, and started the engine. “I’ll see you around, Ronan.”

Still processing the fact that Felicity had spent four months living out of a van while driving around the country, he shut the door after her, stepped back, and watched the ugly green monstrosity pull away.

The truth came to her in the dead of night. By the time the sun rose over Clearbrook, Felicity knew she could no longer hide from it.

It wasn’t about him drugging her.

It wasn’t about losing her chance to kill Vasily.

It was about Ronan Murphy sacrificing his soul to save hers.

The problem was, Felicity had surrendered her soul to the devil years ago.

It was not worth his sacrifice.

And she had to come clean.

She showered, dressed, applied makeup, and secured her badge and service weapon as she had every working day in Clearbrook for the past five years.

Today it would be for the last time.

She dragged a chair into the closet, climbed up, and reached for the object in the back corner. The battered green ammunition tin was cold in her hands.

Tucking it beneath her arm, she walked out of Galina’s house without saying goodbye to the ladies.

She couldn’t.

Ten minutes later, she parked outside the sheriff’s office. She drew a steadying breath, grabbed the tin, climbed out of the van, and strode inside.

Beau looked up as she stepped into his office and closed the door behind her. Without a word, she crossed the room and set her badge, her service weapon, and the battered green ammunition tin on his desk.

She remained standing.

Beau’s smile faded. “Felicity?”

“There are things you need to know about me, Sheriff.”

His gaze dropped to the items on his desk before returning to her face. “What kind of things?”

She met his gaze. “The kind that will end with you arresting me.”

Silence stretched between them. Felicity stood motionless.

Finally, Beau leaned back in his chair. “Do you need a lawyer?”
