… keeping watch …
“You’re…?”
She opened her mouth. Nothing came out.
His gaze hardened. “You don’t trust me.”
“That’s not it.” Her grip tightened, almost desperate. “I—” She broke off, shaking her head. “I just can’t.”
“Why?”
She had no answer.
He huffed, his look scathing, and turned back to the board. “That’s the new family down the road from me. The Fords. Good, decent people. Three kids. Arnie’s on the team with Davey. Nice kid. The dad’s involved. The mom bakes cupcakes.”
His gaze cut back to her. “Yet they’re on your board. Like…” He gestured sharply. “Murder suspects.” He held her eyes. “Explain that.”
She pressed her lips together, caught between the urge to spill everything — every sordid detail — and telling him to go to hell.
“And why do you have a picture of Caleb Voss?”
The question cut straight through her. “Who?”
“Don’t fuck with me, Deputy.” His finger stabbed at the image pinned dead center on the board beneath the label Iron Horse. “Caleb Voss.”
She blinked. “You know the man?”
“I do.” He tilted his head. “You gonna put my picture up there too? How would you word it? Known associate?”
“I’m serious. You know that man? Because he’s a ghost. Nowhere in the system.”
His expression shifted — not softer. Sharper. “Yeah. Did some work on his place a few months back. Small riverfront farm east of town. He moved in from out of state. Ohio, I think.”
“What kind of work?”
“A big shed. For his bikes. Guy’s into off-roading.”
Her senses prickled. Caleb Voss. Finally. A name.
Caught up in the breakthrough, it took her a second to register Ronan moving back to the monitors.
“So,” he said, “you gonna remove your cameras?”
Felicity suppressed a sigh. “No. They’re essential. It’s a matter of life and death. Please … believe me.”
The look in his eyes tore into her.
“The thing is, Felicity, I’m not sure I believe a word that comes out of your mouth.”
Her chest tightened.
“But I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. The others can stay. Beau —your boss — can deal with you when he discovers them.” His gaze hardened. “But my place? I’m taking them down myself.”
He turned for the door. “I’ll have Nate send someone in the morning to assess the damage.” He paused, looking her in the eye. “It’s best I stay away for a while.”
