I did see, and it was depressing.
“The longer I’m with you, the harder it will be to lose you.”
“You don’t know that. I can be quite obnoxious. I give it a couple of weeks, and you’ll gladly send me packing.”
“Ensley—”
I kissed him. I couldn’t take another second of his stubbornness and excuses. Fine. It wouldn’t last. It would end in heartache with too many pints of Ben and Jerry’s and snotty tissues scattered beside my laptop as I attempted to bandage the pain with drunken dungeon runs and weepy calls to my mother.
But not before I had one more night. One last memory that he couldn’t erase. One I could take to the grave since that was where I would wind up one day. What a morbid thought.
Mordecai whimpered and tried, pitifully, to push me away again. I refused to go. His lips moved on mine, parting when I pressed for more. Our tongues dueled, a silky, delicate battle that could never be won. I hadn’t tied my hair back, and he tangled his fingers through the long strands and clung, no longer resisting.
All the elevated sensations I remembered from our first night together returned. A heady mix of roaring lust and aching need. Endorphins surging to new levels. Sensitive skin. Elevated nerve endings. I couldn’t get enough, like my synapses were firing all at once.
I tugged his shirt free and unbuttoned his pants. Wrapping a hand around his length, I stroked until he groaned and bucked, grunted and growled.
“You know,” I said against his mouth, “for an old guy, you’re pretty spunky in the sack.”
He choked and laughed, pulling back long enough to swat my arm. “You’re such an arse.”
“What? It was a compliment. At over four hundred, you should be happy you can get it up at all.”
His eyes fluttered closed, and his head fell back as I continued to work him. “You’re not funny, Ensley.”
“Never claimed to be a comedian.”
“And your timing… is terrible.”
“I have nothing on my agenda.”
He hummed, thrusting into my hand, digging his fingers into my upper arms, both grasping on and making another half-hearted attempt at pushing me away.
“It’s dangerous. This… I’m… not in a good place.”
“Is the counter digging into your back? We could go upstairs.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
I chuckled. “I know.”
“My control is… weak.”
I nibbled his chin and licked a path to his ear. “Why is that?” I whispered.
“You… You’re a temptation. I’ve never…” Another grunt. Another curse. “I’ve never encountered anyone who has done this to me.”
“What? Given you a hand job? I don’t believe that for a second.”
A smile brightened his face, and he shook his head, silently laughing. “I can’t with you.”
“I think you can. You did fine last time.”
“Ensley. I’ve never allowed myself to…” He grunted and bit his lip when I added a skillful twist of the wrist. “Bloody hell. If you keep that up…”
“You’ve never allowed yourself to what?”
“To… to care, you bastard. Stop talking and kiss me.”
