He grins, and I look down at my notebook. I walked in here ready to leave over a bra that wasn’t mine, and now we’re planning our wedding. I should probably stop talking until I’ve had breakfast.
A door opens down the hall.
A woman steps out wearing an oversized T-shirt and a pair of men’s sweat shorts. She makes it three steps before seeing us.
"Oh. Hi."
"Morning," Wolf says.
Her eyes drop to the bra, and she hurries over to collect it and the dress.
"Sorry. I’m just getting my stuff."
"You’re fine," I tell her.
She folds the clothes together, tucking the bra in the middle, then looks back toward the bedroom.
Rooks appears behind her. Shirtless, barefoot, and looking considerably less concerned about an audience.
"Found everything?"
"I think so."
He bends to kiss her. I suddenly become very interested in the flavors on my notebook page.
"I’ll text you," he tells her.
She smiles, says goodbye to us, and slips out the front door with her clothes held against her stomach.
Rooks watches it close, then turns toward the kitchen.
"Baylor Fairbanks. This is a nice surprise."
"For one of us."
He laughs and walks over, catching me in a side hug before I can move my bag out of the way.
"Are you still mad at me?"
"You flooded my kitchen."
"That was over two weeks ago. You can’t stay mad at me forever, can you?"
"She can," Wolf says from beside the stove. "Six years and counting."
I look at him. His gaze drops to Rooks’s arm around me, then comes back to my face.
"Want to try for seven?"
Rooks laughs, and I elbow him lightly. He lets go, still grinning, then pulls out a stool and takes a seat.
"You making enough for me?"
"Wasn’t planning on it," Wolf says, cracking another egg into the bowl.
"Throw in a couple more. I’m starving." Rooks turns toward my notebook. "What are you making?"
"I’m making cupcakes for the Second Shift Sports Foundation gala next month. I'm trying out new flavors today."
