Now he’ll get checked, shower, talk to the press, and get back on the team plane.

I liked watching him with everyone here. I’d like the evening even better if I could take him home.

We stay long enough to help collect plates and get the children out of the fort, and then we leave with more take out food than either of us can eat.

Wolf: You going upstairs tonight?

Most of my things are there. I could go downstairs, sleep in my own bed, and stop borrowing his life quite so thoroughly, but he’ll be home by two in the morning and I want to be there when he gets back.

Me: Unless you’ve changed the dress code again.

Baylor

Olsen is explaining why he still hasn’t asked out the waitress at Fifth Street Café when my phone lights up beside my drink.

Mom: Your dad wants to stop by tomorrow and see the kitchen before we head to the arena.

I read it, then turn my phone facedown.

Across the table, Hunter is staring at Olsen.

"You know her schedule. You know what car she drives. What exactly are you waiting to find out before you ask her to dinner?"

"You could ask her," Peyton suggests.

Olsen looks at her.

Wolf laughs beside me, his hand resting on my thigh beneath the table.

"I think you’re making him nervous," he tells her.

"Good. Maybe he’ll do something."

"You flooded a woman’s apartment to get a girlfriend," Olsen says, pointing at Wolf. "I’m trying a different approach."

"Wasn’t my best opening move."

"It certainly wasn’t," I tell him.

He turns toward me, smiling, and squeezes my leg.

I smile back. I’m trying. Everybody’s here, dinner was good, and for once, I don’t have to rush home to finish an order. This should be a nice night.

Instead, I keep thinking about tomorrow.

Dan’s crew is finishing the last things in my kitchen. They’re working upstairs too, installing the faucet in Wolf’s guest bathroom and checking everything before they leave.
