By the time we get back to the tasting room, she’s shown me enough pictures to furnish the place twice.
"Hungry?" I ask.
"Starving. You should’ve stopped me from rambling on."
"I like it when you ramble on. You’re excited and I’m glad I get to be here for it."
She nudges me, then takes off her shoes while I lower myself onto the blanket. I settle against a cushion, and she sits beside me, tucking her legs beneath her.
When she opens the basket, the smell of garlic makes me glad I ordered extra bread.
"Ellie packed actual plates," she says.
"She didn’t trust me with that part."
"Smart woman."
Baylor hands me a plate, and I start opening the containers.
By the time we finish, she’s stolen the last piece of garlic bread and I’ve decided we need to order from this place again. I stack the containers and tuck them into the basket while she sets our glasses safely beside it.
Then she shifts onto her knees.
"The kitchen, my truck, and now this," she says, resting a hand on my good shoulder.
"I’m expecting a very generous cupcake allowance."
She laughs and brings one knee across my legs. I move my hand out of her way, then settle it at her waist as she lowers herself onto my lap.
"You’re not just the best two-week boyfriend I’ve ever had."
"How many have you had?"
"Wolf." She squeezes the back of my neck. "I’m trying to tell you something."
"Go ahead. I’ll shut up."
"You’re the best boyfriend I’ve had. Period."
I look at her, my thumb still against her waist. She’s close enough that I could kiss her without moving much, but for a second, I just want to hear her say it again.
"I like being your boyfriend, Baylor."
Her smile softens, and she leans down to kiss me. I draw her closer with my good hand, letting her decide when to pull back.
She doesn’t go far.
"You’re making this deadline feel very difficult," she says against my mouth.
"Then let’s stop talking about the deadline."
Her fingers slide into my hair.
"Good idea."
She smiles and reaches for my belt.
I help her get the rest of my clothes off, then settle beside her on the blanket. Her hand moves down my stomach and wraps around me.
