I stared at her.
Then I looked down.
There was a small puddle forming beneath her feet.
For a second, my brain refused to process what the fuck I was seeing.
“The fuck you mean your water broke?” I asked, my eyes widening.
Jru grabbed my hand harder. “EZRA! MY WATER BROKE!”
Malachi turned around at the sound of her voice, and Ashlynn rushed toward us, demanding to know what was happening. I barely heard either one of them as I stared at my wife, trying to remember everything we’d learned about having a baby.
Then it hit me.
My baby was coming.
“OH, FUCK!” I shouted, looking around wildly. “CHI! GET THE FUCKING TRUCK!”
Malachi immediately started digging through his pockets for his keys while Ashlynn screamed that the baby was coming. Yara already had her phone against her ear, calmly arranging for the vehicles to meet us at the entrance.
Jru grabbed my jacket as I bent down and scooped her into my arms.
“Ezra, what are you doing?” she cried, wrapping her arms around my neck.
“WHAT THE FUCK IT LOOK LIKE I’M DOING? WE GOING TO THE HOSPITAL!”
She started laughing despite the panic spreading around us. “Baby, put me down! I can walk!”
“YOU AIN’T WALKING NOWHERE!”
Malachi came running toward us, laughing so hard he could barely get his words out. “E, nigga, calm the fuck down! Her water broke. That don’t mean the baby coming out right this second!”
I turned toward him, still holding my wife.
“AND HOW THE FUCK YOU KNOW? YOU A DOCTOR NOW?”
Jru buried her face against my shoulder, laughing as Ashlynn hollered for everybody to hurry up.
I looked down at my wife, who was somehow the calmest person in the middle of all this bullshit.
“Baby, you good?” I asked, tightening my hold on her.
She smiled up at me, her eyes shining with tears.
“I’m good, Ezra. But we really do need to go.”
I kissed her forehead and started toward the waiting vehicles, ignoring Malachi’s laughter behind me.
Four days of planning. A beautiful proposal. A diamond that cost more than some people’s houses.
And my daughter had apparently decided she wasn’t about to miss the damn celebration.
