“Don’t let her down here!” I yell back.

Someone must grab her because she shrieks indignantly but I’m rooted to the spot. There’s movement around me, and I feel a hand on my arm.

“He dead?” Silver’s voice.

“I’m pretty sure.”

Metal kneels down beside Garth and puts his fingers on his neck. “No pulse. His neck is broken. He’s gone.”

I nod once.

“We need to clean this up,” Silver says. “I’m making a call.” He walks back up the embankment, phone at his ear.

“You okay?” Grim asks, coming over to me.

“I’m fine.” I turn my back on Garth’s body. “Make sure Luna doesn’t see this.”

“I think she needs to see it.”

I scowl. “She doesn’t.”

“Maybe ask her what she needs.”

He has a point.

I look up and see my girl standing with Eric, cursing a blue streak as he tries to keep her from running toward me.

Instead, I jog up to her and wrap her in my arms.

Chapter Forty-Three

Luna

I bury my face in his chest and hold on for dear life. He’s alive. Safe.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispers against my hair.

“You’re sorry?” I tilt up my head in confusion. “For what?”

“For not listening. For not believing you when you said something was off.”

“We had altered security footage. I feel like an idiot. I’m supposed to be one of the world’s best hackers—an elite hacker back in the day—and I didn’t realize that my own security system had been hacked.”

“None of us even thought to check.”

“Thank goodness Jonas figured it out.”

“You didn’t tell me you kept a copy of the list,” he says under his breath, eyes searching my face.

“It was something of a back-up plan, just in case anything happened to me. I have a will and there are instructions in it on how to get to the list and release it to the public. But I never told anyone, not even Daniil. I hoped I would never have to use it.”

“What’s stopping you from releasing it now?”

“The fact that a member of the President’s cabinet, two United States senators, and a member of the British royal family would all probably come for me.” I hesitate. “The truth is, I don’t know if my cover is blown. If I have to go back to witness protection and start over again, as someone else, somewhere else.”

“That’s not going to happen,” he says firmly. “And if it does, we get married and I go with you.”

I stare at him. “You’d leave Shadow Security? Grim?”
