Atom: Hounds of the Reaper

“I did. I rang the alarm. I saw someone get snatched.” He’s bent over, chest heaving. The man might be in his cave of cameras most days, but he really needs to get out more and do some damn cardio. If running from the back of the club to the front gets him winded, he needs to take it as a sign not to skip workout day.

“Was it the prospect?” I ask. Might explain why one is missing.

Flint shakes his head as he stands and takes a deep breath. “Doubtful.” He points to the left. “Look.”

The group of us turn and see the prospect coming out of the bushes, shaking a leg as he zips himself up.

“What the fuck were you doing?” Bulldog demands.

“Taking a leak.” The guy shrugs.

He’s new, but I didn’t realize he was this stupid. The alarm was loud enough for everyone to hear it. That’s the point. And he’s just now coming out from pissing?

I narrow my eyes on him, as do a few of the other brothers. No one believes him. But that isn’t our only problem right now.

“If it wasn’t the prospect, who was it, then?” Jumper asks, and we all look around as if the answer will appear from thin air.

Flint shakes his head. “I couldn’t tell other than someone walked out and got snatched up.”

“Atom, take a head count.”

I nod at the boss man and head to the back. They voted me in as enforcer, and I’m not about to fuck this up.

Besides, I already saw Kooper getting close to the prospect. He won’t let him go. I might be the one meant to take point on the questions, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to give a rat’s ass if someone starts in on it before I do.

Most of the brothers have been helping me out as I adjust to the job. Mostly Mad Max and Kooper, since they’re the former and current personal protection for the club president, respectively. Even Casper has taken time to provide some guidance, as it was his role before he took the promotion he got. These jobs are usually sink or swim as it is. Still, Mad Max, despite not talking much, helps the most. He and I know how to communicate with very few words.

Like now. He follows me, and we take roll of everyone. It takes time, but we confirm no one is missing.

“So, who the fuck was taken?” Casper asks as he bangs his hand on the table. Only the officers are in the area we reserve for Church. A place big enough to hold everyone and secure enough to talk freely.

Flint shakes his head. “You saw the tapes. There’s not much to go on. The cameras weren’t pointed at the front since we had a guard on it, and the van came too fast for any of our systems to catch anything since the plates were missing.”

“Anything show it was idling nearby? Waiting on someone or a sign or something?” Bass asks as he leans back in his chair with his fingers laced behind his head.

Gator, our other tech guy, shakes his head. “No. It was like it came out of nowhere.”

“We thinking it was just a random thing or an opportunity thing?” I ask. Random could mean anyone. Opportunity means we look at known enemies. While the list is long, it’s sure as hell shorter than thinking just anyone could have done it.

“If it was anything at all,” Bulldog mutters. The guy is a true mutt, always growling and muttering about something.

“What are you saying? That I made it up?” Flint asks with more shock than anger at being questioned.

Bulldog shrugs. “Just saying, maybe you thought you saw something that wasn’t there.”

“Look again, then. You decide for yourself.” Flint pulls up the file and syncs it to the TV we mounted on the wall a few weeks back so he could show us shit without having to send the file to our phones.

We all watch. It’s not a straight shot, as the camera is pointed to face the street and not those inside. We rotate the position of the cameras often, but today we had them pointed out and not in, wanting the full safety of knowing what was out there when we had family inside. Sure enough, the camera picks up a van coming close to the gate, slamming on the brakes with the door open, and then someone being pulled in. Then it’s gone.

“Think it was a chick from the length of the hair?” Bass asks, and I stiffen.

“Natalie.” I say her name like a prayer.

“What? You think that’s her? Play it again,” Kooper says, and the tape starts again. But I don’t need to see it again to know.

“Shit,” Kooper says. He might not seem like it, but the guy is all heart. He’d do anything for his old lady, Peaches. And while we all saw the cold shoulder she gave her former roommate earlier, this is going to affect her. And a stressed-out pregnant woman isn’t something the club is equipped to deal with.

We barely survived when Mama Bear was pregnant. Having the club’s former princess knocked up isn’t something a man can train for. We all just ride the wave and hope we survive in the end.
