When the woman didn’t answer, he looked up at her.
She was staring at him like he had a second head on his shoulders. “Is she always like what?”
He felt the skin between his brows pinch. “I take it she’s not this… cuddly?”
She shook her head. “Hardly.” She folded her arms across her chest and damn it, he noticed all kinds of things about her in that moment.
She was beautiful. That, he’d noticed before, but he’d noticed it all over again.
The woman looked beautiful smiling, but frustrated?
Gorgeous.
What did it say about him that he liked the stormy look on her?
She wasn’t slim, but that wasn’t an issue.
He liked it.
He’d noticed her curves.
He smiled.
And his head chimed in.
‘That says I’m not dead at least.’
The words staggered him a little.
That was the issue, wasn’t it.
He was here.
And they’d lost almost half of their unit.
“Are… are you okay?”
He sat back in the chair and stared into thin air.
“I… I probably shouldn’t have asked that. I’m not on staff here. I’m just a volunteer.”
She sat on the arm of the chair beside her, her gaze dropping down toward the linoleum floor.
“I just… you looked… a little lost for a moment.”
His instinct was to blow off her question.
He didn’t want to admit to anything.
Holding it all in was the only way he didn’t start screaming.
“Mister Derringer?”
He turned his head toward the door and saw Nani, one of the nurses at the rehab center, holding onto the doorframe and peeking into the room.
“Your ride is here.”
His ride.
