“Mari?”
She laughed, but it wasn’t a pleasant sound.
More like a harsh bark of sound, half-swamped with water.
“Who… w-who else could it be?”
It took a moment for her to realize how he was holding her.
His chest against her shoulder, his arms moving around her, looking for the best way to hold her.
He didn’t say words to tell her what he was doing.
She just knew.
Heath was there.
He’d do whatever it took to help. To save them.
She knew that, because she knew him.
“Thank God you found me.”
With one arm wrapped securely around her, the other moved under the water, his hand following her arm.
His fingers moved over a sensitive spot and she cried out, swallowing more water.
Heath lifted her up for air, but she lost hold of the wood she was holding onto.
Mari grabbed for Heath, terrified.
The water pushed them free.
BUCK
They were loose.
Pushed by the water.
For a split second he remembered losing her at the house.
But this time he had her.
He had a hold on her.
A hold he wasn’t going to lose.
RIPTIDE
Shit.
Shit.
“Fuck!”
The rain was too heavy for his drone.
He’d tried anyway.
