“Hey,” she says, finally catching up to me. I’m just about to head back to my dorm room after class. Instead, I’m guided towards the cafeteria.
“Have you heard from the twins lately?”
“No, why?”
“Blaire called me on Monday. She said she made varsity on her volleyball team.”
“Really? Holy shit, that’s so awesome!”
“I know,” I say with a grin. “I’m going to her game on Friday. Do you wanna come?”
“Yes!” Tess says right away before she deflates. “Fuck, I can’t. Savannah helped me find a job with one of her buddies. I’m joining a landscaping group. We go around raking leaves and mowing lawns and shit like that. When it starts snowing, we’ll do snow removal.”
“Good for you. I’m glad you found something.”
“Me too,” she says, almost sheepishly. “I’m sorry so much gets shoved onto your plate. I need to be better about helping you out.”
“You’re fine. If I needed help, I would tell you.”
“Would you?”
I pause at her question. I look at my sister and find her looking right back. “What?”
“I don’t think you would,” she says with a shrug. “Tell me you needed help, that is. You put all of this on yourself and never complain and never ask for help. You just take it. It’s kinda fucked up and I’m sorry it took until we were away from that awful fucking place to realize it, Thane.”
“Oh,” I say, picking up a lunch tray and walking over towards the food line. I don’t really know what to say to that so I eventually just shrug. Tess snorts in response, shaking her head at me.
We grab some food and make our way to a table, sitting down. My phone buzzes and I pull it out, my stomach fluttering when I see it’s a message from Maverick.
Maverick: All set! I’ll be able to drive with you on Friday.
Me: Are you sure? You don’t have to…
Maverick: I know I don’t have to. I want to.
Maverick: But if you don’t want me to come, you can borrow my car.
Me: I want you there! Thank you, Maverick <3
Maverick: You’re welcome <3
“What’s gotcha grinning at your phone?”
I quickly put my phone into my pocket, glaring over at my sister. “It’s nothing.”
“Certainly didn’t look like nothing. Was it your new boyfriend? Mister short, gray, and scrubby?”
I blink. “Scrubby?”
“Yeah! Cause he’s a doctor and they wear scrubs!”
I pinch the bridge of my nose, letting out a long sigh. “Yes, it’s him.”
“I knew it!”
“Whatever. It’s not a big deal. He’s going to drive me home for Blaire’s game on Friday.”
“You’re gonna let them meet him before I do? This isn’t fair, Thane.”
