Whisper

“Got it. You know you can talk to any of us if you ever need to.”

His expression softens. “I know. Thanks.”

Nodding, I exit his office and walk back to the rec room. I want to talk to Boone about researching this asshole with the date rape drugs.

I find him sitting on the couch with Pax playing a hockey video game.

“No, dude. You can’t be Hen. I’m Hen.”

“No, you’re Bouche.” Boone rolls his eyes and shoves his brother.

“I can’t be. This is the new edition and I’m retired.”

“Oh.” Boone pouts, scrolling the screen. “Okay, I’ll be LaBelle.”

“Then we’re on the same team.”

“Damn it.”

“Sorry to interrupt, but, Boone, when you take a break I have a task I could use your help with.”

His face lights up and he nods. “Let me kick my brother’s ass and I’ll be with you.”

We all laugh at that. Paxon Bouchard was a phenomenal player before he retired, and those skills often translate to a video screen.

I sit down and watch them for a minute. I don’t really need Boone’s help with this, but I like to ask when I can so he knows I value him too. He does a lot of work for the other guys, and I don’t want to shut him out.

My phone buzzes and I pull it out of my pocket.

Blush: Thanks for… you know. All the stuff you do.

Me: You’re welcome, brat.

Blush sends back a string of laughing emojis and then a kissy face.

Me: I’ll be at Segreto tonight to see you.

Blush: Good. You’re gonna love what I’m wearing.

Me: Gonna sing tonight?

Blush: Nope, but it’s a customer favorite. Don’t miss it. Ten PM.

Me: Won’t miss it.

I manage to find the kissing face emoji and send it back.

Blush: You’re so unexpectedly cute sometimes. I like you.

Me: I like you too.

I tuck my phone away as a smile dances on my lips.

Twenty minutes later, Pax has obliterated his brother in the video game and Boone turns his attention to me.

“Save me, Whisper.”

Chuckling, I gesture for him to come over. He joins me at the round pub table where I’m sitting with my laptop.
