Christmas Under Fire

“No one likes a tail gater,” Jenna reminded herself, tapping her brakes to put at least two car lengths between them.

Fifteen minutes later, she and Brody were ushered into the station. She’d thanked Brody and told him he could leave, but he insisted he needed to give his statement, too.

Then he’d said, “And I still need to talk with you about that other thing.”

Right. The fact that someone had hired him to find her.

If she thought making a statement would be quick, she was in for a surprise.

She focused on the officer sitting across from her. His name tag read Officer Green. His glasses kept sliding down his nose and he’d absently push them back up with his index finger.

“Run me through it again. What time did you leave work?” He pinned her with his sharp brown eyes.

“I’ve already told you the whole story.” Actually, he’d asked her the same questions in two different ways, so technically she’d answered the question twice. The only thing she could think of was he was trying to catch her in a lie. But why would she make up something like this? Holding in a sigh, she repeated her answer. “I normally leave at five, but today my boss let me go at four fifty because we had no more appointments for the day and the weather looked bad.”

“Have you ever seen the man who’d attacked you today?”

She’d answered this before, too.

“No. I didn’t even see him today. He had a ski mask on.” She’d already told him that, too. She’d never forget the feel of the woolen ski mask beneath her fingers as she got one hand free and tried to fight back. It had been no use. The man had been too strong and easily overcame her attempts.

If Brody hadn’t intervened—

Little sparkles of light danced in front of her eyes.

Brody’s arm around her shoulders brought her upright. “It’s okay, Jenna. I’ve got you. Breathe.”

Breathe. She could do that. Jenna gulped in air, filling her lungs and clearing her mind. “I’m okay. Thanks.”

He carefully removed his arm and moved away from her. She felt his gaze on her face.

Officer Green’s expression never changed, but she swore she could see some sympathy in his eyes. At least he wasn’t taking pleasure from torturing her like this.

“Miss Stone, can you think of anyone who’d want to hurt you?”

You mean anyone who’d want me dead? She pressed her lips together to keep her snarky thoughts to herself. Then she thought about his question. “No. I don’t think I have any enemies. I mean, my boss’s brother doesn’t care for me, but I wouldn’t say he’s my enemy.”

Officer Green sat straighter. “His name? Your boss’s brother?”

Jenna squirmed on her hard wooden chair. “Seriously, he’d never—”

“We have to check all angles, Miss Stone. His name?” Officer Green’s gaze bore into her, like he could read her soul.

She shifted again. Matt would be mortified. “Andy. Andy Samuels. I work with him. He didn’t think a hard of hearing woman could handle the front desk and was against hiring me. But we’ve worked together fine.”

Andy could be a little cold. Maybe even condescending. But he’d never been outright mean to her. Since she’d proved herself capable, he’d even thawed enough to invite her to join him and a couple of other staff to go grab a bite after work a time or two.

She always said no. Crowded restaurants weren’t her thing.

Another officer entered the room and passed something to Officer Green. “Well, Miss Stone, the parking lot has been gone over. The police officers saw nothing. I’ll also be interviewing your boss and your coworkers to see if any of them noticed anything unusual. It could be that there was nothing personal in this attack at all. It might have been a random attempt to mug you.”

She didn’t agree. It felt very personal. After the calls, how could this not be connected?

Officer Green shifted his gaze to Brody. “I am curious about you, Mr. Carson. You came to rescue her at the perfect time.”

Brody folded his hands together on the wooden rectangular table, he leaned in and kept his gaze focused. He’d already been through this, but he had an idea that the officer was going deeper this time.

He was ready.
