A Little Bit of Sweetness

“I’m more concerned about your son saying that he wished that I would go away.”

“This is new for both of us. He’s used to it just being us. Amber comes around from time to time. His mom has been around more in the past couple of months than she has in the past six years. Her spending time with us for those couple of days gave him the wrong idea.”

“I don’t want him thinking I’m trying to replace her. I know I can’t do that.”

“I explained that to him. He was scared, but we’ve been talking lately. I told him that we all want his mom to get better, but that doesn’t mean that me and her are going to be in a relationship. She will always be his mother, but she and I are done.”

“I’m glad you had some time to talk.”

“Baby, I’m so sorry. I should have anticipated this. I should have realized that things changing so fast and his mom coming in the picture out of the blue might confuse him. I don’t know how to navigate this shit. No wonder the boy snapped.”

I laughed under my breath, making a smile break through on his handsome face.

“I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, but I want to try, baby.”

I nodded. “Me too.”

“Can we figure it out together? I don’t want you pulling away from me.”

“Just don’t take the tires off my truck again.”

He grinned. “I won’t.”

“I’m serious, Quinton. Do I need to have Rhonda check on my truck?”

“I’m not gon’ take the tires off this time,” he said, sitting next to me on the bed.

“Stop playing, Quint.”

He picked up my hand and kissed the back of it. “Damn, I missed you fussing at me. I might put a boot on the truck just to get cursed out.”

“See, you play too much.” I mushed his head, making him laugh even harder.

“I missed you so much, baby.”

“It’s only been a couple of days.” I smirked.

“So, you didn’t miss me?”

“Of course, I missed you,” I confirmed, moving to straddle his lap.

His hands palmed my ass as he nuzzled his nose into my neck. “I love you, Shiloh,” he whispered.

“I love you too, baby.”

“How much longer before my son wakes up?”

“Oh, we’ve got time,” I said, cupping his face and kissing his soft lips.

Rolling me over onto my back, he kissed me deeper. “All I need is time.”

I woke up to the sound of Trey laughing so hard that I thought it was a dream at first. I popped out of bed because I knew my boy had to be hungry by now. It was a wonder he wasn’t fussing.

“You stink like hell for a little guy. Mommy’s milk makes you smell like a grown man.” Quinton’s voice was soft before he growled, making Trey howl with laughter again.

I stood at the door for a while, watching Quinton dress Trey, then pick him up and cradle him against his chest.

“Now it’s time for daddy to eat. I wonder what mommy has in there for me to whip up,” he said, turning to walk out of the room.
