The only man Theo had ever seen me with was Greg. Theo liked Greg in spite of his many flaws. I made sure not to have a bunch of different men around him, not that I had been dating anyway. Now I was curious about how he felt seeing me with someone else.
Theo shrugged. “I like that he’s funny and takes us places.”
I nodded my head. I guessed that was good enough. It wasn’t like we were talking ’bout marriage or anything. It was just a date.
“If y’all get married, does that mean me and Victor would be brothers?”
“Yeah, I guess it would. It’s just a date though.”
“Ooo, a date. That means you like him. I knew it,” my son teased.
“Boy, get your little butt in there and put on your shoes.”
My mom had already picked Trey up. Once I was done getting ready, I was headed over to drop Theo off at Quinton’s house. From there, I would ride with him to our destination.
Thankfully, Theo didn’t ask a million more questions on the way to Quinton’s. He was so excited about going over to play with Victor that he didn’t care what I had going on. We sang along to the radio as we made the drive. As soon as I pulled into the driveway of Quinton’s house, Theo’s peanut-headed self jumped out of the car and ran to the door. By the time I got out of the car, he was already knocking.
“I like how you waited for me.”
“Come on, Mama,” he said right as the door creaked open.
Quinton looked better than ever with his hair pulled back. He wore a dark blue and white vertically striped button-down shirt with matching blue pants and white sneakers. I loved seeing him dressed casually.
“Hey, Mr. Quint!”
Theo shouted as he dashed into the house. I could hear him and Victor getting reacquainted as I walked up.
“You look good, Mr. Woods.”
“You took the words right out of my mouth, baby. Let me see you,” he said, taking my hand and helping me to twirl around.
A simple pink satin halter top and black wide-leg jeans seemed to be just right for a date night with no destination in mind. I felt good, and with the way Quinton eyed me, I must have looked pretty good too.
“Stop now before you make me fall.” I laughed. My heels were only three inches, but since I rarely wore them these days, I didn’t want to take any chances.
“I got you. I’m not letting all this get dirty unless you want to take a detour.”
“No, sir. You owe me a night on the town.”
“Whatever the lady wants, she can have.”
“Let me just say bye to the boys and thank your daughter for babysitting.”
“Uh-uh, thank her when we get back. We got a schedule to keep. If that girl starts talking, we will never get where we’re going.”
I rolled my eyes but allowed him to lead me to the passenger side of his truck. We listened to the radio and rode in a comfortable silence until we made it to our destination. Quinton turned into the parking lot of a building that I had passed a few times but never visited. Now, I really had no idea where we were going.
“What’s this place?” I asked as we pulled into an empty spot.
“It’s kind of an all-purpose building. Tonight, they’re hosting an event.”
“What kind of event?” I inquired.
“R and Bingo. I wanted to do something a little different. I figured it would be fun. They have music, games, and food.”
“Oh, that sounds fun.”
“Good. Since we already had dinner, I didn’t want to just have food.”
