A Little Bit of Sweetness

“See, that’s why I’ll have to pass.”

“That reminds me. Did you bring everything with you for little league sign-up? We can go together.”

“I’ll have to go by the house and grab it.”

“I’ll pick you up from there then. I usually try to get in the pickup line early as hell.”

“Tell me about it.”

“Well, come see us when you get a chance. We miss you.”

“I will.”

“Bye. I’m about to read my guy a book before he eats them all up. Get that out of your mouth, Lil’ Q. That’s not food, buddy,” I heard Quinton say as the call ended.

Rhonda and I closed, and since I didn’t have to rush off to get Trey, I was able to clean up and get some prep work done for the next day. It was such a relief to not have to worry about being late for pickup.

“Alright, bae. Go enjoy your family.”

“I will. See you in the morning. What time are you coming?”

“I’ll be here by eight.”

“OK, see you then.”

Rhonda went her way, and I headed for the building to check on my boys. It was still an hour and change before we had to go get the boys from school. The only thing I wanted to do was get off my feet. When I made it to Quinton’s office door, I smiled at the handwritten ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign. I didn’t even know why I was surprised that he actually put it up.

Since we had already established that the sign didn’t apply to me, I opened the door and let myself in. My big boy was knocked out in the playpen with a stuffed dinosaur in a headlock. I burst out laughing when I noticed that Quinton was sprawled out on the couch with one of his arms over his eyes. I guessed he did need that nap after all.

“Don’t wake my son up with all that cackling,” he cautioned.

“Shut up. How are you in here sleep, and you’re supposed to be working?”

“I’m tired. They already say I get in the way with my micromanaging ass.”

“Aww, the baby didn’t get enough rest last night?”

“No, I was up like a kid on Christmas Eve waiting for this beautiful young woman to come visit me,” he said, lifting his head to look at me.

“Imagine how she must have felt.”

“I love the boys, but I’m looking forward to spending some alone time with you tomorrow night.”

“What’s going on tomorrow?”

“We have a date. Don’t act like you forgot.”

“In all this excitement, I kinda did.”

“Well, I’m glad I reminded you because I don’t want to hear that shit tomorrow. I got you a sitter if you need one and everything.”

“I’m sure Theo would love to hang out with Victor again, but I think I’ll take Trey to my mom.”

“That’s fine, as long as you don’t find a reason to cancel.”

“I won’t.”

“Come lay your head on my pillow for a little while. I know your feet are tired,” he said, patting the spot beside him.
