“Don’t just rush off. I don’t want you to think anything crazy is going on.”

“What should I think when I see a woman ducking under your arm and running up in your house as soon as I pull up? It looks like you forgot you told me to come.”

“I just told you I didn’t know she was coming. She just showed up.”

“OK. You don’t owe me an explanation. Go be with your family.”

“I do owe you an explanation. I’m your man, and I’m not playing games or trying to be sneaky. You can come inside and meet her if you want.”

“No thank you. See you later, Quinton. I have to get to work,” she said, throwing the car in reverse and pulling out of my driveway while I stood there looking crazy.

I stomped my foot, just like Victor’s little ass did when he got mad, before heading back into the house. The only reason I shook my head was because I finally saw where he got that shit from. I wanted to stomp more than my foot, but there was really no one I could blame for what had just taken place. I did tell Trish to come whenever. It was my fault that I didn’t consider that she was the most inappropriate person on the face of the Earth.

“Dad, my mama is here!” Victor yelled as he ran to stand in the doorway.

“I know, man. I saw her,” I mumbled. I wanted to curse her ass all the way out, but Victor’s excitement took some of the fire out of me.

“Who the hell was that?” Trisha asked, standing with her hands on her hips when I walked back into the house.

“None of your fucking business.”

“If she been around my son, it is my business.”

“You’re here to see Vick. See him,” I reminded her.

“I’m hungry, Dad. Do we have time to eat pancakes before I go to school? It’s real early.”

“You’re not even dressed,” I responded.

“I can get dressed really quick. Can we, please? Mama, you like pancakes, right?”

We looked over at Trisha at the same time. My morning was already ruined in one aspect. The least I could do was try to make it a good one for my boy.

“Yeah, I could eat if your daddy want me to come.”

Instead of speaking on how she tried to pull my card, I did what I knew was right.

“Go ahead and get ready for school, Vick. We’ll grab breakfast on the way.”

Victor took off for his room, and I turned to look at Trish. “Hmph. I see you was expecting someone. No wonder your whorish ass tried to make me leave,” she said, folding her arms across her chest.

“Don’t make me talk to you crazy when my son here.” I warned her.

“Who the hell was that, Quint?”

“Why is that any of your business?”

She laughed. It pissed me off that she could get under my skin. “You mad I messed up your booty call?”

“I’m about to get dressed. Can I trust you to stay in here by yourself without having to weigh you before you leave?”

“You can strip search me if you want to, baby daddy. Don’t act like you don’t remember how we used to get down.”

“Used to! Don’t forget the most important part. Never again,” I said, shaking my head as I left the room and headed back to my bedroom.
