A Little Bit of Sweetness

“I already see that,” he said, glancing over and winking at me.

It was a short drive to the mini golf spot. After about fifteen minutes, we walked inside. The place was packed. We stood in line forever before Quinton paid for our session. As we made our way to our designated course, the boys ran ahead and started without us.

It didn’t take long before we were deep into the game. Both Victor and Theo were horrible golfers, but they were having a blast. Quinton had activated my competitive bone, and I was kicking his butt. I didn’t care about that ‘you’re supposed to let the man win so he could feel like a man’ stuff.

If he wanted to win, he needed to step his game up. On the other hand, I couldn’t remember the last time I laughed so hard. It was good to just unwind. My eyes shot over to Quinton as his ball ricocheted off the windmill for the third time.

“I hope you’re not trying to let me win. I want to beat you fair and square,” I warned, reaching over to take Trey from Quinton’s arm so he could take his turn.

He laughed. “Hell nah. I just don’t know what the hell I’m doing.”

I didn’t know why that made me laugh so hard. He had talked all that noise about beating me when he couldn’t play in the first place.

“Stop laughing. Something is wrong with the floor too. They got it rigged.”

“You might be right.” I smiled.

“I finally got one, Mama!” Theo cheered.

“Go, baby!”

“We’re getting better. It’s hard to get the ball in, but it’s still fun,” Victor added.

“That’s all that matters.”

“Your mama kicked my butt. I’m ready to eat now,” Quinton said.

“Me too.” Theo agreed.

“Yeah, me too.”

We left the golf course and headed inside. There was an empty booth near the door, so I instructed the boys to sit in it while I grabbed a high chair for Trey.

“Give me that chair,” Quinton said, walking up beside me as I picked it up.

“I’m not gon’ argue with that. You see how heavy this boy is. I get a full body workout just lugging him around.”

“You don’t have to do it all by yourself. I’m right here.”

“I see you.” I smiled.

“Good. I love to see you smile. I have to make sure I stay on this side of you, not that I don’t love your sassy side too.”

I rolled my eyes. “I am not sassy.”

He chuckled. “See.”

“I don’t see anything.”

“Wow! You really got my son with you while you’re out here with another nigga?”

I was nosy sometimes, but even I knew when to mind my business. I wouldn’t have even turned around if I didn’t recognize the man’s voice. I turned around to see Trey’s father standing a few feet away. There was a woman clinging to his arm, so I had no idea why he wanted to bother me.

“Don’t start, Greg. This is a kids’ place.”

“It’s a kids’ place but your grown ass is up in here with a nigga and got him over my damn son like I ain’t his daddy,” he fussed.

“I’m not the one who acts like you’re not his daddy. That’s all on you.”
