“No one else needs to get hurt. And you must have seen the news. The Siblet have made their move, and they aren’t working alone.”

“I never did trust them. They’ve been banned from this waystation for over a decade. I still haven’t figured out how they snuck on here with those creatures and that poison.”

“You won’t need to worry about them for much longer.” Dallin selected several loaded guns and then strapped the grenade belt around his chest.

“Do you know how to use the grenades?” Nalid tapped a finger on one. “They’re simple. You set the timer, then hit the main activator button.”

“Got it.” He nodded at her. “Thanks.”

They headed out of the armoury and back along the corridor.

“There’ll be a ship docking soon. It’s called the Apocalypse. That’s my ship, and the crew has all been poisoned. They got infected the last time we visited the waystation,” Dallin said.

“Crap! We’re getting new cases every hour. How are they holding up?”

“We’ve got a great team keeping things together. You’ll receive a comm from Cleo Newman. She’ll have the details of the antidote. It’s simple to make now we know what all the components are. They’ll fix everyone up with the antidote if your medical team can’t reproduce it.”

“We’d appreciate that.”

Dallin dashed away. He slowed before he reached the docking bay. He needed to get Sloane off the ship. This mission wasn’t for her.

He headed to a public comm line and connected with her mobile link. “Hey, Sloane. I need you to do something for me.”

She hesitated for a second. “Sure. Do you need something from the ship?”

“No, but we need food. Can you pick some up?”

“Food? You never remember to eat.”

“Not for me, for you.”

“I can make do with the supplies we have on the shuttle.”

“You need to look after yourself. The antidote is almost done, so there’s nothing you can do on the ship. Can you manage a short trip to the store?”

“I can manage. Brutus will help me. What do you want?”

“Surprise me.”

Sloane was quiet again. Did she know he was lying to her? “Okay. I’ll head out now.”

“And keep Brutus close. He’ll look after you.”

“He doesn’t leave my side, so that’s a given.” She sucked in a breath. “Dallin, is there anything you need to tell me?”

He pushed away his guilt. “No. I... you’re a good human. A good female. I like having you around.” There was so much he wanted to say, but the words stuck in his throat.

“Uh, huh. Well, I’ll see you soon.”

“Yes. And Sloane, be careful.”

“You too, sugar.”

He’d get another sticker on his dick of the year chart for this. Sloane hated him deceiving her, but this trip might be one-way, and there was no chance he wanted her getting involved with blowing up a mine.

Dallin returned to the docking bay and cautiously approached the ship. He headed inside. “Sloane?”

There was no answer. He had a quick check around, to make sure she was gone, then he packed away the explosives, and set a course to Irla.
