“When we get out of here, things will change,” he said.
“We’re getting out?”
“Of course. We’ll work together. It never fails. We’re the perfect team.”
Eden closed her eyes again and couldn’t stop more tears from falling. “What’s the first thing we’ll do when we get out?”
“Have a shower. It’s getting a bit ripe in this cage.”
“Funny guy.”
He chuffed out a laugh. “I’ll take the shower with you. I’ll get your wounds treated, make sure you’re in no pain, then strip you out of your dirty clothes, get you under a steaming jet of water, and soap you down. I’ll take my time, massaging your back, legs, and chest. I’ll run my hands all over you. Then kneel in front of you and use my tongue to taste every inch of you.”
Her heart sped up. It was an amazing hope to cling to. They’d get free, they’d be together, and all their problems would disappear.
“Now, how about you kiss me again and take away the pain? I kinda loved the first one,” Blaze whispered.
Eden slowed her breathing and stroked a hand down his face. She leaned closer and gently swept a kiss across his lips, keeping it soft. They were too battered for anything else.
He groaned. “Give me more.”
“I would, but it might kill us both.”
“I’d be happy to die being kissed by you.”
She smiled, wincing as her cut lip tingled. “Romeo and Juliet style romance has never been my thing.”
“I don’t know them. Did they get a happy ending?”
Her smile slipped. “They got an ending. It wasn’t great for either of them.”
“We’ll have a great ending. Now, kiss me.”
Eden didn’t try to resist. She kissed the sides of his mouth, dancing her lips softly over his.
Blaze groaned as she shifted her weight on his chest.
“Sorry!” She pulled back.
“No, it’s good. Don’t leave me.”
Eden paused and tilted her head, her gaze shifting to the closed door.
“Someone’s coming,” Blaze said, his hand tight against her back.
Her stomach clenched as three Pecket marched into the room and over to the cage. Madrie was among them.
Eden turned her head but remained plastered against Blaze. She never wanted to leave his side again.
“How disappointing. The human survived the night.” Madrie tapped the bars, a smug look on his face as he sneered at Eden.
“We’re hard to kill,” Eden said.
“I have zero interest in you. The sooner you bleed out, the better,” he said, his attention shifting to Blaze. “But I did discover some interesting news a short while ago. It seems we’ve caught ourselves a baron.”
Horror jabbed into Eden like a rusty blade as her fingers curled around Blaze’s arm. Fuck! They’d learned his true identity.
Madrie chuckled. “It took some digging, but one of my guys was convinced he’d seen you somewhere before. It turns out he had. He attended a parade your family held years ago. And you were right there alongside them, handing out donations to the poor. I’m guessing your parents will pay a lot of money to have their beloved son back.”
