“I came close. Fortunately, I saw sense. Anyway, I reckon when this little guy bit you, he claimed you. He’s in mating mode. Check out the striations on his stomach. That means he’s looking for his one true love. And you’re it. Congratulations. Sorry, I haven’t had time to get you a wedding gift.”

“Just so long as he doesn’t bite me again,” Blaze said.

“He won’t. He’s head over heels for you. Nipper won’t want to leave your side.”

“What was with the attitude the first time we met? That didn’t feel like true love.”

“He had glass embedded in his paw. It’s what made him vicious. I took him to the vet while you were asleep, and she sorted him out. The second the glass was taken out and his wound was patched up, Nipper turned into an angel. Now, you’ve got a new best friend.”

“Huh! I never figured I’d pick up one of those on this trip.” Blaze studied the doggo. Nipper was cute, but he didn’t trust him. “How long have you been in here?”

“I came by a couple of hours ago. The doctor told me everything was healing well, although you’ll feel weird for a few hours until the venom has left your system.”

“You didn’t have to wait here for me to wake up.”

Eden smoothed a hand over the sheets. “I did. We’re partners.” She glanced at him then looked away. “You were out of it when they brought you in. You said weird stuff.”

Blaze closed his eyes for a second and took a deep breath. He remembered barely any of that, but he knew he’d talked about finding a match. Damn! What had he told her?

“I did nothing odd when I was under the influence of this little monster’s venom, did I?” he asked.

“No. You did nothing odd.”

“Did I say anything weird?”

She shrugged. “You weren’t making sense. You talked about your family a bit. I couldn’t figure out what you were telling me.”

He clenched the sheet in his hand. “My family?”

“Yup. Something about responsibility and files and finding a match.” Her gaze flicked away again.

Blaze tentatively touched the doggo, needing time to force back the memories. How much had he revealed to Eden?

“Nipper likes you,” she said.

“So long as he’s not trying to chew off my arm, that’s all I care about.” He was a cute critter. His fur was like velvet, and he was making little snuffling sounds.

Eden cleared her throat. “I checked on our ship. The repairs will be done in a couple of days. We won’t be behind schedule. We can head back to the Apocalypse on time.”

“I bet the missions have been stacking up whilst we’ve been away.”

“I’ve been in touch with Cleo. She knows what’s going on.” Eden played with the sheet again.

“Any news on Ranger and the others?” Blaze asked.

Eden grimaced. “They’re not great. They’re alive, and I got in to see Ranger. None of them will be back on duty anytime soon.”

“I didn’t realize things were that bad for them.”

“You should check in on them when you get a moment,” she said.

“I will. They’re a solid crew. They saved our asses out there.”

Eden perched on the edge of the bed. “I guess this means our trip to the waterfall is off.”

Surprise pinged through him. “You still want to do that?”

“Sure. Why not? It sounds like fun.” Eden didn’t meet his gaze.
